This special evening supports our local service programs that empower women and girls, provide transportation for cancer treatment, and help ensure family food security in our community. 2025/2026 Post-Secondary Educational Awards

Thanks to your generous support, the Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor (SIFRI) organization was able to award $4000 to each local woman listed below.

Women's History Month

In honor of International Women’s History Month, let us reflect on the many women whose strength and dedication have helped shape our island community and the world beyond it. Here in San Juan County, women have long played essential roles — from early settlers who served as teachers, caregivers, and community leaders, to Violet P. Boede of Friday Harbor, who represented the San Juans in the Washington State Legislature at a time when few women held public office -- and for six terms from 1934 to 1950.  

Another interesting tidbit is that the first woman to serve as a mayor of a major city was Bertha Knight Landes, elected mayor of Seattle in 1926!

And did you know whenever you use Google maps or similar nav tools, you need to honor women like Dr. Gladys West, whose mathematical research in the 1970-80s made the GPS technology we rely on every day possible. 

Their stories remind us that when women and girls are supported and encouraged, they go on to change lives, strengthen communities, and create a brighter future for all.
