Many of you already know that Soroptimist FH has been providing ferry tickets to cancer patients and their caregivers for travel to the mainland for treatment since 2018. This program was designed to help ease a family’s financial burden during a stressful time. On average over the last full six years, Soroptimist FH has purchased 234 Driver and 134 accompanying Passenger tickets per year (~ $80K from 2018 to 1Q2025). We are also now funding inter-island tickets for islanders to travel to Friday Harbor for treatment.
For many years, we have had a partnership with the San Juan Eagles, a convocation of local pilots established in 2002, who generously provide flights to Skagit Valley or Bellingham appointments. Over the years, but for the most part, up to 200 flights have been made each year by pilots donating their time and airplanes for this purpose.
Soroptimist FH recently combined our efforts with the Community Cancer Fund who will arrange overnight hotel stays for our patients that need to be back the next day in either Seattle or Bellingham. Below is a quote from one of our patients who recently took advantage of the new offering:
"The hotel was absolutely perfect - conveniently located near the hospital, with a seamless check-in process. The room itself was immaculate, with a comfortable bed and pillows. It was a huge relief to have a peaceful and restful place to stay after my hospital visit. Thank you again for your kindness and assistance. It's greatly appreciated!"
